        Rehab / Past Rehab Horses

http://www.q13fox.com/news/kcpq-neglected-horses-rehabilitated-by-nonprofit-group-20110824,0,5509515.story?track=rss

Four Arabians currently in rehab, all were seriously underweight & wormy, impounded in June 2011 for care, are pending litigation. These horses will take several months to regain their full weight & muscle tone.

8-23-11 Good vet check on all horses. They are ready to start an exercise program to regain muscle tone along their toplines  and hipbones.

Horse #1 Magic: Arab Stallion, approx 12 yrs old, currently being halter broke, is becoming very people oriented, likes being brushed and rubbed on.

Now halter broke, turning into a nice horse, becoming trusting of people

In his new home, in good weight and healthy

After 90 days Magic is haltering well, scores a 5.5 Henneke Scale

Horse #2 Iron, we call him Manny; Arab Stallion, approx 16 years old, gentle natured, just a very nice boy. Really enjoys his groceries.

This is the nicest horse, now at a Henneke score 5, he can't approach people fast enough to get scratched. His weight is now good, but he needs to gain some muscle tone along his spine. Manny is a small guy, but has a big heart.

Enjoying the good life with a knowledgeable person that will teach him to ride and that the grocery bin is always full

After 90 days, manny has cut back on his chow. At a 5.5, he now needs to build some muscle tone along his spine.
Horse #3 Marjorie; Arab mare, approx 14 years old, high energy, wonderful movement, comes running when she sees you. Needs someone to love on her. Pretty, pretty mare

This mare moves like she is floating on clouds. She has learned that people give scratches & if she backs up to you she might get her tail scratched.

Has been doing ground work, lounges on line and in the round pen, good for the farrier, has great feet, always comes running when she sees you. Has been placed in a lifetime home.

Marjorie has started on an training program and is learning round pen work. Now picks up all four legs for trimming
Horse #4 Babs: Arab mare approx 12 years old. This mare is gentle, very kind hearted, from Arab lines that are known for their gentle nature.

This mare is a real lady, likes attention and other horses. She had the worst feet of the four, but they are getting much better with regular trimming. As you can see, she always has her mouth closest to the nearest food source.
Now on the Chubby side, has gained her muscle tone back. We have been working on ground driving, lunging and she has been ridden. Babs is a quick study, has accepted all training without hesitation, has a gentle heart.
Has been adopted.

Scores a Henneke 5, is at a weight where she can have her daily rations cut back
Lizzie, a 13 year old mini, previously foundered, walking on feet that had not received proper care for an extended period of time. Pictured are her feet at time of impound.
Update After two trims by a natural care farrier. Lizzie will always need the have her feet done on a regular basis, but she is walking normally and pain free. Thank you Diedra, for the work you have done on her hooves.
Lizzie is in a permenant home receiving regular hoof care

Willow, a weanling about seven months old at the time on intake. He had painful rain rot patches on his back that will leave lifetime white hair patches. Full of worms & under nourished, he was not halter broke. After being examined by a vet, it was determined that Willow was about 18 months old instead of the 7 we were initially told he was, making him much older than his size would suggest. Two weeks into rehab, he is walking politely on a lead and learning to trust people.
Update; 10 months after intake, Willow is growing up and turning into a handsome fellow. He will be an averaged size horse, now that he is receiving proper nutrition. He has learned to pony alongside another horse. Willow has been adopted into a lifetime home.
2nd Update; Being started under saddle, this guy is athletic & cowy, quick & smart
Willow

Bandit, An Arab, in his mid teens that was impounded by law enforcement. The before picture is on 2-27-10, 3 days after impound. He had a body score of 1 & was very emiciated.
The during picture was taken on 3/29/10. Bandit had just had a good roll in the sand & was dirty, but his weight had increased to a body score of 3.
The After picture taken on 5/04/10 with a body score of 5. Bandit is now enjoying life in a new home with a Sr buddy & a nice family.

Jimmy a 20 year old Clydesdale, standing 17.3 hands. At intake he scored 1.5 Henneke scale, weighing only 1314 lbs. He came to us with mites in the feathers of his legs, loaded with worms, maggots in the crack in his hoof, and needing his teeth floated.

*** Update ***
Jimmy pictures at over 1800 lbs & a body score of 5.5. The term "Gentle Giant" that people talk of when referring to Draft horses was the epitome of Jimmy. He was adopted and lived for two more years in a home where he was loved & cared for. Always coming to the gate for a pet whenever he saw you, he gave as much as he received.

Losing a horse can break your heart, but it will have been worth it
